Jenn Shifflet: Dream Pools, Light Drifts
August 7 - September 26, 2009 Opening Reception: Friday, August 7, 6 - 9 PM
In her most recent oil paintings, Jenn Shifflet continues to explore subliminal spaces that are familiar yet unidentifiable. Small clusters or large masses of forms inhabit otherwise placid expanses that recall airy atmospheres or murky depths. The occupying forms are more populous, varied and defined than in Shifflet's previous works. In addition to the round bubble, sphere or sunspot shapes and waterfall, curtain or drip-like strands, there are stylized ripples, waves or cloud formations. Some stylization is inspired by motifs in Tibetan thangka paintings. The results are pools of dynamism, like vortexes or activated puddles. Richly layered, luminous surfaces conjure vast space. As a counterpoint and reminder of the paintings' physicality, occasional gem-like dots hover on the surfaces. Among Shifflet's influences are 19th century Romantic painting in which an individual's imagination, emotions and mental state were valued above scientific rationalism and realism. The evocative sky- and seascapes of J.M.W. Turner and John Constable come to mind when viewing Shifflet's immersive interior landscapes. Some of Shifflet's blue-green paintings, with hints of the rippling surface of water, recall Claude Monet's Water Lilies. Along with her contemporaries Ross Bleckner and Darren Waterston, Shifflet juxtaposes specifically defined and sometimes internally illuminated elements against atmospheric spaces to a sublime effect.
